In Like a Lion, Out like a Lion. March in the South

 It certainly has been a blessing to see the signs of spring. While out walking the fence yesterday we got to see something I had never seen before. The emergence of thousands of lady bugs. You could smell the musty smell they have before you ever saw them. Apparently they wintered in the roots of our sweet gum trees that line the creek. While checking out the cool fungus and mosses on the trees you see one then two then "Holy Moly" they were everywhere.

We have seen more than a few folks come and go through the Forge. Some drive for a while on purpose to get here. Others find us just by hap-n-stance. Some come to see what its all about and others come with some very preconceived notions about the process and the craft.  There are exceptions to all rules but experience can certainly make some things stand out. A step at a time We lost complete control when this forging thing grabbed Walter by the hand and said "Come On". It didn't take long to realize you can't plan when you don't know where you are going. Each day brings in its own time new friends, means to keep the lights on, head scratching and the most amazing stories. Walter attracts folks. Like a bug to a light. Characters with stories to tell and things to pass along. Thats the stepping stone part. Last Christmas brought one of those really good days where a good time was had...

Chairs, Birthdays and Too Much Fun at Walter Forge

Monkeys with tools Saturday was one of those rare days when it all comes together no matter how many wrenches the monkeys throw. Last minute changes had carefully spaced activities all happening at once. But all had patience with the hostess and the rain ceased to fall. Everyone visited and made new friends while I took care of business and made it look like I knew what I was doing. We were honored this week end to have Lenton Williams, a master hand maker and teacher at the John C Campbell school in North Carolina, here to teach chair caning...
