Antique Hand Mirror with Serpentine Handle
Flow Blue Porcelain and Silver Make a Lovely Back to the Mirror
In the early 1900's Asian Artisan works were very fashionable. The beauty of the artful designs and skill hands made for wonderful objects to be used and showcased.
This hand mirror is backed by white porcelain with deep blue floral hand painting in the style of flow blue pottery. The casing is not marked silver but cleaned to a pretty shine with silver cream. The silver hardware is embellished with raised decorative accents all around the mirror and to secure the handle.
The handle is made from a stone called Serpentine and is sometimes called faux Jade. Serpentine is found in layers on the ocean floor where the plates have pushed the floor upward. It is a silicate similar to jade and opals created by time and process. It is softer than Jade making it a good source for carving and shaping. The color ranges from a darker green to almost white in color with visible darker inflections within the stone.
The mirror is 5 1/2 inches long and 2 1/4 inches at the widest spot. It is in very good condition and still has its original box. The mirror is clear and unblemished.
