Antique Oval Ornate Frame - Mother and Child
1933 Art Print by Kathe Kollwitz in Antique Frame
To be quite honest my eyes were drawn to the frame first. The thick wood with rounded lines and ornate raised artistic elements draws the eye. But as a former art student the talent of the artist quickly became the focus. The ability to capture the feeling of the moment is a true talent.
As I began to research the artist I learned about an extraordinary woman as strong as she was talented. As a German woman that opposed Hitler during the war, most of her art depicted the plight of the poor and the horror of a mother when her children were in danger. This work is one of the few that capture a moment of pure love you feel from a hug around the neck. Mrs. Kollwitz passed away in 1945.
Someone may want to replace the print with a family photo or something else wonderful. Some one may be drawn to the wonderful drawing it holds. The art work is on a thick textured board and has the artist signature on the bottom. The prints this work that I was able to fine did not have the signature. It would most certainly need to be verified by qualified appraisers.
The antique oval frame is approximately 15 inches tall, 13 inches wide and 2 inches thick. The print has information about the artist printed on the back and is from the Royale Academie Gallery of Fine Arts.
